Riss, surprisingly it does very well for a screen adaptation. You will notice some additional (witty and modern) lines throughout the film, which is reflective of Tim Bevan's work, as well as a few new scenes. Though insuffient time is permitted to explore all the characters, and themes with the depth intended by Austin, it does however manage to convey them well with the time given. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous (you'll love it), and the closing scene is particularly poignant, and executed beautifully. Undeniably, it doesn't compare to the BBC version, but overall the movie remains faithful to the novel. The film is satisfying, in all regards, and I suspect it should reach, if not, exceed your expectations. I think you'll enjoy it! :)
And Bev, I don't know what it is with girls and P&P. I enjoy it for a number of reasons, which altogether makes it a classic.
