A Blank Canvas
I love being at home alone. There is a beauty found in space. A peacefulness found in solitude. Something enlivening about being saturated in silence.
Now that I've set the scene. Onto other wonderful things.
The last three weeks have been fun. Grocery shopping. Cooking. Cleaning. Washing. Ironing. Vacuuming. Yes. I've loved it. Though it's been tiring, it's definitely been fun.
Twice a week I'd find myself engrossed in my trips to the local Woolies; browsing, selecting, and buying a range of edibles, and most evenings, spending time in the kitchen; cutting, preparing, and throwing a whole cascade of goodies together.
More and more I'm discovering the creative freedom found in cooking. I don't usually get the opportunity to indulge in the art, so I relished the opportunity despite the constraints attributed in cooking for one. And shopping? Well, I'm a girl. Therefore, shopping and I naturally meld. Pardon my generalisation.
It was interesting to observe the habits I've automatically adopted from my parents, and whilst I've exercised my own preferences, and creative flair, I am thankful to them for their providing me with a strong working foundation.
Some of my favourite creations include:
1. Chinese melon with cauliflower and vermicelli noodles in ginger and soy sauce.
2. Steam salmon steak with balsamic vinegar, sesame oil, garlic and corriander.
3. Squid with leek, and button mushrooms in garlic and oyster sauce.
It's been fun experimenting - playing around with flavours, colours, textures, and seasonal varieties. There is room for refinement, such as my judgement of portions, and time amongst other things. I trust the future will give me more opportunities to practice along with the chance to entertain.
