The Breath of Life
Lantana is one of my all time favourite films. Brilliantly tight. Wonderful characterisations. Poignant themes.
Placing aside my layers of thoughts, these two lines in particular capture the heart and tone of the film:
"Sometimes love isn't enough", and
"Trust. It is as vital to human relationships as breath is to life."
On the other side of all the revelations I'd received this past week, I've come to realise that when it comes to trust in the context of romantic relationships, a women's greatest challenge is learning how to give her trust to a man, and a man's greatest challenge is learning how to gain and accept the trust of a woman.
Lantana does a wonderful job at illustrating the delicate nature of trust through a complex web of relationships and diversity of characters; all the while subtly interweaving the character of modern Australian life into the mix. This, amongst other things, is what makes this such a brilliant film.
If love alone in a fallen world of broken and imperfect relationships is not enough... the amazingly beautiful thing is, trust in His perfect Love definitely is.
